Barco Reale Carmignano 2019 – Capezzana.

We are diving into Tuscany again, today’s appellation is the Barco Reale DOC, a separate part of the Carmignano DOCG. In this review we are discussing the 2019 Barco Reale by Tenuta di Capezzana.

About the Region

The Barco Reale DOC has its rights granted since 1975, it is closely tied to the Carmignano DOCG. 15 kilometers from Florence this area centers around the town of Carmignano. The DOC is mainly used for the younger or “declassified” wines from the DOCG. Your chance to get some good value for money. The primary focus for grapes is Sangiovese but as the area has a long history in blending this grape with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon or some local varieties. In one of our next reviews we will discuss the Carmignano DOCG.

About the Winery

Capezzana is one of the leading producers in the region. Like many wineries in the area they are masters in blending, with a history dating back to a time long before the word “Super Tuscan” was even known. The Contini Bonacossi family acquired the winery in 1920 and produces wines in different appellations. In total they operate ~100 hectares of vineyards. Besides wine they are a very active olive oil producer.

About the Wine

80% Sangiovese, mainly accompanied by Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon. The vines grow on a soil that consists of clay and chalk, and the wine ages for 6-8 months in oak, plus 3 months in the bottle.

In the glass a ruby red color. A sweet but intense nose of red fruit, vanilla and oak. On the palette a full-bodied wine (ABV 13.5%) with the typical strong acidity. The fruit profile on this one is still very prominent. Sweet and savory, with pleasant tannins and a decent aftertaste. Very nice entry to what the region and winery have to offer.

We happily award this complete wine with a 92/100 DWA Score. The wine can be bought at various retailers for a price around €15, –
