The Diplomat occupies a distinctive place within the portfolio. Rather than focusing exclusively on Cabernet Sauvignon, it brings together Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah in a Bordeaux-inspired blend that prioritizes depth, texture and longevity over varietal purity. The 2021 vintage continues that philosophy, offering a wine that is unmistakably Napa Valley in both scale and character.

About the Winery

Fortunate Son is the personal Napa Valley project of acclaimed winemaker Jayson Woodbridge, best known as the founder of Hundred Acre. While Hundred Acre centres on highly sought-after single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons, Fortunate Son allows Woodbridge greater freedom to explore historic vineyards throughout Napa Valley and produce wines inspired by classic blends as much as by the region’s own identity.

Fruit is sourced from a collection of small, family-owned vineyards, some of which have been farmed by the same families for several generations. Many of the vines are more than eighty years old, producing naturally low yields and intensely concentrated fruit. Woodbridge’s philosophy remains uncompromising, from meticulous vineyard selection through to extended barrel ageing, resulting in wines that are powerful, expressive and built with long-term cellaring in mind. The Diplomat stands as perhaps the clearest expression of that vision, combining fruit from multiple sites into a wine that showcases the breadth and generosity of Napa Valley rather than a single vineyard.

About the Wine

The 2021 Diplomat is unmistakably Napa Valley. Deep ruby in colour, it immediately opens with generous aromas of black cherry, blackberry, cassis and ripe plum, followed by layers of dark chocolate, espresso, cedar and sweet baking spices. With time in the glass, notes of tobacco, graphite and warm earth emerge, adding further depth without taking away from the wine’s ripe fruit profile.

The palate is broad, concentrated and full-bodied. Ripe black fruit sits at the centre, surrounded by flavours of mocha, cocoa, vanilla and toasted oak. The high proportion of Merlot gives the wine a plush, velvety texture, while Cabernet Sauvignon provides the structure necessary to support its considerable weight. At 15.5% alcohol, this is certainly a powerful wine, yet the fruit concentration and polished tannins keep everything in balance.

Rather than striving for restraint, The Diplomat embraces a richer style. It is generous, mouth-filling and confidently built, delivering layer upon layer of dark fruit and oak-driven complexity. The finish is long and persistent, leaving lingering impressions of black cherry, dark chocolate, cedar and espresso.

This is a wine that will appeal most to those who appreciate the opulent side of Napa Valley. While approachable after decanting, its concentration and structure suggest it has the capacity to develop further over the next decade.
