About the Winery

Located in the village of Ürzig in the heart of the Middle Mosel, Weingut Dr. Hermann has become one of Germany’s benchmark producers of traditional Riesling. The estate farms several iconic steep-slope vineyards almost entirely by hand, with a philosophy centred on expressing individual terroirs rather than imposing a winemaking style.

The Erdener Herzlei is among the estate’s most treasured sites. The Alte Reben parcel is planted with exceptionally old, ungrafted vines, many well over a century in age, rooted deep within blue-grey Devonian slate soils bordering the famous Erdener Prälat. These ancient vines naturally produce tiny yields of intensely concentrated fruit while preserving the remarkable finesse that defines the Mosel’s greatest wines.

For Dutch Wine Apprentice, Dr. Hermann firmly belongs among Germany’s three finest producers of off-dry and sweet Mosel Rieslings.

About the Wine

The 2019 Erdener Herzlei Riesling Spätlese Alte Reben Goldkapsel is captivating from the very first pour. The nose is remarkably expressive yet beautifully refined, revealing aromas of ripe white peach, apricot, pink grapefruit and preserved lemon before gradually opening towards more exotic notes of mango, star fruit, honeyed pear and orange blossom. Delicate hints of fresh ginger, white pepper and wild herbs add further complexity, while a cool slate-driven minerality provides freshness and definition throughout.

The palate immediately demonstrates why this bottling occupies such a special place within Dr. Hermann’s range. Although classified as a Spätlese, it possesses a concentration that borders on Auslese, yet never loses the effortless elegance that defines the finest Mosel wines. Layers of succulent stone fruit, candied citrus, passion fruit and ripe grapefruit unfold seamlessly, supported by vibrant acidity that lifts the wine and keeps every sip fresh, energetic and incredibly precise.

The extraordinary old vines contribute remarkable depth and texture without sacrificing delicacy. There is an almost weightless quality to the wine despite its richness, creating a beautiful interplay between luscious fruit, crystalline acidity and the unmistakable mineral imprint of blue slate.
