Sparkling wine production has evolved considerably over the past few decades, with winemakers increasingly embracing blended cuvées as a way to create distinctive house styles. And this doesn’t only apply to world-famous sparkling wines as Champagne but even in our small Dutch country, and its beautiful Limburg region defined by its rich marl soil.
The 2023 Cuvée XII Brut from De Apostelhoeve is a fine example of this process. By blending 50% Auxerrois, 25% Riesling and 25% Pinot Gris, the estate creates a sparkling wine that balances aromatic richness with freshness and a mineral balance. It is celebratory and elegant, yet offering a distinctive interpretation of sparkling wine from the southernmost vineyards of the Netherlands.
The vineyards are laying South-West on the edge of Maastricht, more particular in the Jeker Valley. Unlike much of the Netherlands, this region features rolling hills and soils rich in marl and gravel coated with loss, geological conditions that closely resemble those found in neighboring wine regions of Germany and northern France.
These rich soils provide excellent drainage while imparting a subtle mineral character to the wines. Combined with a favorable microclimate and increasing viticultural expertise, Limburg has emerged as a serious cool-climate wine region. Wines from this area are typically marked by fresh acidity, refined aromatics, and a mineral base, reflecting both the unique composition of the soil.
Situated on top of the Louwberg, overlooking the hills south of Maastricht, De Apostelhoeve is widely recognized as the oldest and most influential wine estate in the Netherlands. In 1970, founder Hugo Hulst planted the first vines on these slopes, at a time when many believed quality wine production in the Netherlands was impossible. More than five decades later, the estate has grown into a benchmark for Dutch winemaking.
Today, the Hulst family cultivates around 20 hectares of vineyards, planted with Müller-Thurgau, Auxerrois, Riesling, Pinot Gris and, since 2020, Viognier. The estate is now in its third generation, with Robin and Gilbert Hulst joining their father Mathieu, ensuring the future of this pioneering winery.
Through a combination of experience, innovation and deep respect for the local terroir, De Apostelhoeve continues to define the style of Limburg wines: fresh, mineral, elegant and unmistakably unique.
The Cuvée XII Brut 2023 presents a brilliant bright yellow colour with a fine and persistent mousse. The nose is expressive and inviting, revealing white blossom and light tropical fruit, accompanied by delicate hints of honey and almond biscuits.
On the palate, the wine is lively and refined, its lively acidity bringing freshness, while the mousse remains silky. The flavour profile is crisp and broad, with layers of yellow fruit supported by a distinctive mineral character derived from the well-layered soils surrounding Maastricht.
Conclusion
The Cuvée XII Brut 2023 beautifully illustrates how far Dutch sparkling wine has progressed. Combining aromatic richness, vibrant acidity and the unmistakable mineral signature of Limburg’s marl soils, this cuvée is both refined and expressive.
It stands as a confident example of modern Dutch winemaking elegant, balanced and unmistakably terroir driven. Something every Mestreechteneer, Limburger and Dutchie are proud of.
We award this wine a 91-point DWA score.
