Marimar Estate: Spanish Heritage Meets Sonoma.
What do you do when you come from one of the world’s most renowned winemaking families? You carry that legacy with you, but you also carve out your own path. For Marimar Torres, that meant crossing the ocean and building something entirely her own.
At 81 years old, Marimar still radiates the same energy, charm and determination that shaped her pioneering career, Marimar represents the fourth generation of Spain’s celebrated Familia Torres. This spring, we had the pleasure of meeting her at Celia Amsterdam, where she shared both her wines and her story — one shaped as much by independence as by heritage.
For five generations, the Torres legacy has been passed from father to son. At Marimar Estate, that tradition shifts. Together with her daughter Cristina, she is shaping the first mother-to-daughter chapter in the family’s history.
The Torres Family – Tradition and Innovation
The Torres family has been cultivating vines in Catalonia since the 17th century. In 1870, brothers Jaime and Miguel Torres established the House of Torres in Penedès.
Under the leadership of Miguel’s grandson, Don Miguel, and his wife Doña Margarita, the company grew into a major force in Spanish wine. Over the course of six decades, they guided the business through expansion and modernization, helping define Spain’s international reputation for quality wine.
Marimar Torres remains closely involved as Vice President of Familia Torres.
“My parents’ support was essential to our vineyard and winery project in California. My father was my first and most important mentor. He taught me three main factors for success: quality, enthusiasm and perseverance. Upon his death, my mother became my most fervent supporter. She would be proud to know that we have started in the U.S. the first mother-to-daughter legacy! It is with great appreciation that I dedicate this venture to my parents.” – Marimar Torres
Marimar Torres – A Life in Wine
Born in Barcelona in 1945, Marimar Torres grew up immersed in wine. She studied Business and Economics at the University of Barcelona, later completed the Stanford Executive Program, and spent a year studying Enology and Viticulture at UC Davis.
From a young age, she traveled extensively with her father, helping promote the family’s wines around the world. In 1975, she moved to San Francisco, a striking contrast to Spain at the time, and quickly adapted to her new surroundings.
“I just fell in love with it — the beautiful rolling hills, everything about it,” she recalls. “I was told the site would be ideal for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and I thought: perfect — those are exactly the wines I love.”
Meeting Marimar Torres is always a real pleasure.
Before launching her own winery, Marimar led Torres’ export business in North America, increasing annual sales from 15,000 to 150,000 cases. A remarkable achievement built through persistence and hard work — including personally hauling countless cases of wine. At the same time, the idea of creating something personal began to take shape, eventually leading her to the Russian River Valley.
Alongside her work in wine, Marimar is also a respected authority on Spanish cuisine and has published two cookbooks inspired by regional traditions and family recipes.
Today, she runs Marimar Estate together with her daughter Cristina, who joined the company in 2020 and became General Manager in 2023.
Marimar Estate – A European Soul in California
Marimar Estate reflects both heritage and personal vision. The vineyards are named after her parents, and the estate follows a European approach to viticulture, adapted to a Californian landscape. Marimar shared a simple yet most important piece of knowledge:
“Vineyards are like a child, you give them what they need, not what they want.” – something she learned by practice.
Marimar Estate in Sonoma CA.
Located in Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley and Green Valley, the winery is built around the idea of a true estate: complete control from vineyard to bottle. The winery itself, designed in the style of a Catalan farmhouse, sits on a hill overlooking the Don Miguel Vineyard.
Sustainability has long been central to the estate. Since the early 2000s, the vineyards have been farmed with a strong focus on biodiversity and soil health, using composting, cover crops and natural pest management. This approach extends to the wider operation, with solar energy, electric equipment and a broader awareness of environmental and community impact.
The Vineyards
At the heart of Marimar Estate lie two distinct vineyard sites on the Sonoma Coast, each shaped by cooling Pacific influence, carefully selected clonal material and a strong commitment to sustainable viticulture. Together, Don Miguel Vineyard and Doña Margarita Vineyard form the foundation of the estate’s elegant and terroir-driven style, expressing both the diversity of the Russian River Valley and Marimar Torres’ meticulous approach to vineyard management.
Don Miguel Vineyard
Founded in 1986, the Don Miguel Vineyard is located in the Green Valley of the Russian River Valley, about 16 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean. Cooling breezes and drifting fog shape the climate, slowing ripening and helping preserve freshness and balance in the grapes.
Chardonnay and Pinot Noir form the core of the vineyard, each covering around 8 hectares. Chardonnay was planted first, followed by Pinot Noir in 1988, at a time when the variety was still relatively uncommon in California. Smaller plantings of Albariño, Syrah, Tempranillo and Godello together account for approximately 2.5 hectares, adding a subtle Spanish dimension to the estate.
High-density planting, more than four times the traditional spacing, results in lower yields but greater concentration, structure and aromatic precision. Multiple Chardonnay clones are used to build complexity, while Pinot Noir is divided into separate selections that are vinified and aged individually, each matched with carefully selected French oak.
Doña Margarita Vineyard
Established in 2002, this vineyard lies around 11 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean on a south-facing slope along the West Sonoma Coast. Ocean fog brings cool nights, while the vineyard’s position often places it above the fog line during the day, allowing for warmer temperatures and balanced ripening.
The soils are particularly distinctive, combining volcanic origin with marine sediment influence. A thin layer of sandy loam over fractured sandstone contributes to both structure and finesse in the wines.
Planted with cuttings from the Don Miguel Vineyard, including Pommard and Dijon clones, the site continues Marimar’s focus on precision and detail. Pinot Noir from this vineyard is shaped by the interplay of coastal influence, elevation and carefully managed viticulture, resulting in wines defined by elegance and clarity.
The Wines
The wines of Marimar Estate reflect the philosophy that has defined the winery from the very beginning: precision in the vineyard, restraint in the cellar and a clear sense of place. Across both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, there is a consistent balance between Californian generosity and European elegance — wines shaped as much by the cooling influence of the Sonoma Coast as by Marimar Torres’ Burgundian inspiration and Spanish roots.
During our tasting in Amsterdam, the range showed remarkable clarity and finesse, with each wine expressing both vineyard character and thoughtful winemaking. From the vibrant freshness of Albariño to the layered complexity of the estate’s Pinot Noirs, the wines combine structure, energy and understated sophistication.
2024 Albariño | Don Miguel Vineyard | DWA Score: 90/100
Originally inspired by the cool, rainy climate of Galicia, this Albariño found its ideal expression slightly further inland at the Don Miguel Vineyard on the Sonoma Coast, where the variety ripens more consistently. Fermented in stainless steel and concrete eggs, the wine rested on its lees for around five months, enhancing texture and complexity.
A vibrant style with mineral tension, pineapple and white peach aromas, balanced by refreshing acidity. Riper and slightly broader than a classic Galician Albariño, yet still distinctly fresh and energetic. The first vintage was produced in the early 2010s.

2020 “Acero” Chardonnay | Don Miguel Vineyard | DWA Score: 92/100
“Acero”, meaning steel, refers to the wine’s complete absence of oak influence. Fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel, while undergoing malolactic fermentation, this Chardonnay focuses on purity, precision and fruit expression.
Lively and refined, showing tropical fruit, white blossom and citrus notes alongside a crisp, delicate palate. There is a Burgundian sense of finesse, though expressed through the riper fruit profile of California.
2023 “La Masía” Chardonnay | Don Miguel Vineyard | DWA Score: 92/100
“La Masía,” Catalan for farmhouse, is a tribute to Marimar’s roots. When she produced the first vintage in 1998 and presented it to her father, his response was immediate: “We have to make wine in California. This is the best white wine I’ve ever tasted.”
The wine combines elegance and texture, offering subtle hazelnut and vanilla notes alongside fresh tension and layered roundness. A carefully balanced maturation regime — one-third stainless steel, one-third neutral oak and one-third one- to two-year-old oak — preserves freshness while adding depth and complexity.
2019 “La Masía” Pinot Noir | Don Miguel Vineyard | DWA Score: 94/100
An unfined and unfiltered Pinot Noir deeply inspired by Burgundy. The vineyard is planted with Burgundian clones, while the barrels are crafted from Vosges oak, creating a distinctly French sensibility within a Sonoma Coast expression. Each clone is carefully matched to specific barrels to build nuance and complexity.
At a time when Pinot Noir was still far from fashionable in the United States, Marimar was already committed to the variety. The wine shows orange peel, subtle herbal tones and finely integrated French oak spice, wrapped in an elegant yet layered structure.
“Mas Cavalls,” Catalan for horse farm, references the estate’s former horse barns, now transformed into an event space located just below the vineyard.
This Pinot Noir is darker and more structured than “La Masía,” while still retaining the estate’s hallmark elegance. Concentrated red fruit, forest floor and warm spice notes are supported by refined tannins and vibrant acidity, giving the wine both depth and freshness.
A Legacy Reimagined Across Generations and Continents
In many ways, Marimar Estate represents far more than a successful Californian winery. It is the story of a woman who respected her family’s extraordinary heritage while having the courage to step beyond it and create something entirely her own. Marimar Torres brought together the traditions of Spain, the precision of European viticulture and the possibilities of the Sonoma Coast, helping shape a new vision for Californian Chardonnay and Pinot Noir long before these styles became widely celebrated.
Today, that pioneering spirit continues through the collaboration between Marimar and her daughter Cristina — a new chapter within one of the wine world’s most historic families. The wines themselves reflect this balance between heritage and individuality: elegant, terroir-driven and unmistakably personal.

Meeting Marimar in Amsterdam offered more than an introduction to her wines. It revealed the personality behind the estate: warm, determined, visionary and deeply connected to both family and place. Even after decades in the wine world, her enthusiasm remains unmistakable — proof that true pioneers never stop looking forward.
