Dorli Muhr and Spitzerberg: The Pursuit of Blaufränkisch Perfection

Dorli Muhr and Spitzerberg: The Pursuit of Blaufränkisch Perfection.

Dorli Muhr and Spitzerberg: The Pursuit of Blaufränkisch Perfection.

Dorli Muhr is widely regarded as one of the leading interpreters of Blaufränkisch in Austria. From the windswept limestone slopes of the Spitzerberg in Carnuntum, she has built a reputation for wines defined not by power, but by precision, finesse and a profound sense of place.

Today, her estate comprises 12 hectares of vineyards, almost entirely planted with Blaufränkisch on some of the most distinctive sites of the Spitzerberg. The wines consistently attract critical acclaim for their transparency, elegance and ability to capture the character of this remarkable terroir.

Yet the story began with a vineyard parcel of barely 0.17 hectares, gifted by her grandmother and planted with a handful of white grape varieties. The journey from that modest beginning to one of Austria’s most respected Blaufränkisch producers is inseparable from the landscape of Carnuntum and the unique conditions of the Spitzerberg itself.

From a Family Vineyard to the Spitzerberg

What happens when your grandmother gives you a small parcel of vineyard land? In the case of Dorli Muhr, it marked the modest beginning of her career as a winemaker, the emergence of a drive for knowledge and experimentation, and the ambition to produce wines at the highest level.

The very beginning was small-scale. From barely 1,700 square meters (0.17 ha) of vineyard, planted with a mix of white grape varieties, a few bottles were initially made for family and friends.

But the wine bug quickly took hold. At first, Dorli looked to France and Tuscany in search of vineyards to purchase. Her relationship with Dirk van der Niepoort eventually brought her to Portugal’s Douro Valley, where she discovered that a warm, dry climate combined with the right grape selection can give rise to truly great wines.

Eventually, she decided to return to her small vineyard parcel on the Spitzerberg in Carnuntum. Here too, the climate is warm and extremely dry. The original vineyard was uprooted, and Dorli Muhr began a process of experimentation to determine which grape varieties were best suited to the conditions.

Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Tempranillo, Merlot and Syrah were all given a chance, but in the end, it was her first love, the local variety Blaufränkisch, that proved most successful. Not only did it show strong resilience to the conditions, it also best translated the character of the soils into the wine in the glass.

Today, Dorli Muhr owns 12 hectares of vineyards, almost all located on the Spitzerberg near Prellenkirchen. All vineyards are classified as 1ÖTW, the Austrian Erste Lage designation defined by the Österreichische Traditionsweingüter. Of these, 11.5 hectares are planted with Blaufränkisch and half a hectare with Syrah.

Carnuntum: Between the Alps and the Carpathians

Far in the east of Austria, bordering Slovakia, lies Carnuntum. At the eastern edge of the region, in the village of Prellenkirchen, is Weingut Dorli Muhr. The Slovak capital Bratislava is only about 15 kilometers away.

Here, mountains give way to a rolling landscape, positioned between the Alps to the west and the Carpathians further east. Carnuntum occupies a distinctive position within Austria’s wine landscape, combining a markedly continental climate with strong Pannonian influences. This geographical position is fundamental to understanding both Carnuntum and the wines of the Spitzerberg.

Situated between the Alps and the Carpathians, this area has historically been a corridor of movement. In Roman times, Carnuntum developed into one of the most important cities of the province of Pannonia. Between the 1st and 4th centuries AD, it grew into a major urban center with more than 50.000 inhabitants.

This geographical position continues to define the region today. Not only could people move north-south without crossing mountain ranges; air masses also follow the path of least resistance, making this a notably windy area with a near-constant airflow. The prevailing south-southeasterly winds bring warm air from the south and play a key role in shaping the climate. At the same time, humid westerly influences are blocked in the Danube plain, reinforcing the region’s dry conditions.

Carnuntum is a dry region. Average annual precipitation (2011-2019) amounts to around 600 millimeters. Average sunshine over the past decade reaches approximately 1.950 hours per year, a figure more typical of warmer, more continental wine regions. The average air temperature is 11,5 °C, with the eastern part of the region slightly warmer than the west.

Spitzerberg: Vineyards Defined by Wind, Limestone and Time

Dorli Muhr’s home vineyard is the Spitzerberg near Prellenkirchen. Here, in 1995, she received from her grandmother the 0,17-hectare parcel, the starting point of what would become her estate.

The Spitzerberg is an isolated, south-facing ridge with a maximum elevation of 302 meters. Once rising as a reef from a prehistoric sea, it now defines the local landscape. The vineyards lie on its slopes between 195 and 265 meters above sea level, with gentle inclinations of up to 21°. In total, 23 hectares are planted here.

The soils are dominated by limestone and dolomite, with vineyards mainly rooted in poor, calcareous sandy sediments over a limestone-rich subsoil of sand and sandstone.

These deep soils are highly permeable and extremely dry. The limited rainfall – locally around 400 mm over the past decade – is barely retained. The continental influence brings hot summers and cold winters, with pronounced seasonal contrasts.

On the Spitzerberg, the almost constant cool wind plays a decisive role. It prevents excessive heat accumulation and helps preserve freshness in the grapes, resulting in wines with vibrant acidity and notable finesse. A high number of days are officially classified as “windy,” with gusts exceeding 40 km/h.

Taken together, these factors create extremely dry, windy, and warm growing conditions, encouraging a long vegetative cycle and slow, late ripening.

In 2019, the Spitzerberg was classified as Erste Lage (1ÖTW) by the Österreichische Traditionsweingüter. The 12 hectares owned by Dorli Muhr are further divided into more than 30 individual parcels, some of which are currently in the process of being elevated to Grosse Lage status.

Weingut Dorli Muhr: A Study in Finesse and Place

If there is one word that defines the wines of Dorli Muhr, it is finesse. Despite the warm and dry conditions of Carnuntum, the objective is never power or concentration. Instead, the focus lies on transparency, freshness, precision, and the faithful expression of site.

Since 2018, the estate’s vineyards have been certified organic. In the cellar, every decision is guided by the desire to preserve the natural elegance of Spitzerberg Blaufränkisch. The new winery, completed in 2022, was designed to support this philosophy and to allow each parcel to be handled individually.

All grapes are harvested by hand, with rigorous selection to avoid overripe fruit. Around half of the crop is foot-trodden, partly with whole clusters, to enhance tension, energy, and structural finesse. Maceration and spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts take place in large open vats, while the estate’s 12 hectares are divided into more than 30 individual parcels, each vinified separately to capture the nuances of site and exposition.

The wines mature for approximately twenty months in large, neutral oak casks. New oak and barriques are deliberately avoided, ensuring that fruit, texture, and terroir remain at the forefront.

The designation Ried Spitzerberg is reserved exclusively for wines originating from the highest vineyard parcels near the forested crest of the hill, an area that forms part of a protected nature reserve.

Six Expressions of Blaufränkisch: From Village Wine to the Spitzerberg Grand Terroir

To better understand how Dorli Muhr translates the character of the Spitzerberg into wine, we tasted six Blaufränkisch bottlings spanning village-level and single-vineyard expressions. Together, they illustrate not only the consistency of the estate’s stylistic philosophy, but also the remarkable diversity that emerges from differences in elevation, exposition, soil composition and vine age.

What unites all six wines is a commitment to finesse over power. Even the most concentrated examples remain defined by freshness, transparency and finely woven tannins, while each bottling offers a distinct perspective on the Spitzerberg and its surrounding terroirs.

This wine originates from the Kobeln sub-vineyard, the highest site on the Spitzerberg, situated between 210 and 270 meters above sea level. The soils here are extremely stony, very dry and highly exposed to wind. Kobeln covers a total of 4,5 hectares, of which Muhr farms 1,1 hectares. This Liebkind vineyard was planted in 2008 and is characterized by exceptionally low yields due to the poor soils, only producing approximately 900 bottles per year.

Deep purple-red in colour. Layered aromas of blueberry, black cherry and ripe raspberry are interwoven with floral notes of rose and elderflower. Subtle nuances of smoke, white tobacco and sweet spices add further complexity.

Compact and concentrated on the palate, with a dense core of ripe cherries and forest berries. Despite its greater density, the wine remains energetic and precise, driven by lively acidity and a refined tannin structure. The fine-grained tannins provide grip without sacrificing elegance.

Long finish with dark fruit, floral accents and a subtle stony minerality.

A narrow-terraced parcel on the Spitzerberg situated at 210 – 240 meters elevation. The soils are sandy and rich in limestone, with large limestone rocks scattered throughout the vineyard. Dorli Muhr farms five Blaufränkisch parcels here, covering a total of approximately 1,3 hectares. A further 0,4 hectares is planted to Syrah. The vines were planted between 1965 and 2004.

Medium crimson-red in colour. The nose opens with a subtle stemmy note and delicate green herbs, before aromas of red cherry, blackberry and floral nuances gradually emerge. With aeration, additional layers of damp earth, black tea and dried herbs unfold, adding depth and complexity.

On the palate, the wine combines elegance with remarkable precision. Juicy red cherries and dark red fruit are carried by a lively, finely woven acidity that brings tension and freshness. The tannins are exceptionally fine-grained and build gradually, giving the wine a texture that is supple, energetic and structured. The mouthfeel is refined, transparent and subtly grippy.

The finish is long, seamless and harmonious, with persistent notes of red cherry, delicate spice and an earthy, lightly mineral undertone. The combination of suppleness, precision and length gives the wine a strikingly refined and almost weightless character.

Obere Spitzer is the westernmost and steepest terraced section of the Spitzerberg. In many places, the vineyard soils contain exposed rock and limestone boulders embedded in coarse calcareous sand. The vines are more than 30 years old. Part of the fruit is foot-trodden, fermentation occurs spontaneously, and the wine is matured for 24 months in large oak casks.

Medium crimson-red in colour. The nose is initially discreet and restrained but gradually gains complexity. Red cherry, pomegranate and delicate forest berries are complemented by subtle floral notes, dried herbs, a hint of mint, and nuances of undergrowth and cedar. The aromatic profile remains consistently refined and understated.

On the palate, the wine displays a remarkable combination of intensity and lightness. Juicy red fruit is supported by a vibrant, perfectly integrated acidity that provides tension and energy. The tannins are exceptionally fine and silky, present without ever taking center stage. The wine is supple and almost weightless, with a precision that continually draws attention.

The finish is long, pure and persistent, with lingering notes of red fruit, subtle spice and a chalky minerality. A wine of great finesse, where elegance and depth come together seamlessly.

Conclusion

Dorli Muhr’s wines stand among the most compelling expressions of Blaufränkisch in Austria today, defined by precision, restraint, and a consistent focus on site expression and a detail-driven style. This approach has not gone unnoticed, with the wines regularly attracting strong critical attention and high scores from the international wine press.
