2018 Westhofener Riesling by Weingut Wittmann.

In this review we are discussing an Orts Wein, or Village wine, by Weingut Wittmann from Rheinhessen. If you would like to learn more about this winery and their wines check out the other reviews we wrote and the interview with Weingut Wittmann in our talkshow Cellar Talks.

The Wine

This dry Riesling is made out of grapes from some of the famous sites in Westhofen (Rheinhessen). The vineyards (and wine) are classified as 1. Lagen (Premier Cru’s).

The wine is an unmistakable expression of the region’s terroir and characteristics, leading to great limestone minerality. Hand selected grapes make it to the winery, where in the cellar gentle pressing is followed by traditional vinification methods. The wine is thereafter primary fermented in traditional large barrels.

When opening the wine, you instantly experience a great bouquet. Citrus and tropical fruits are in-play here. It is unbelievable how much quality this wine is revealing at the start. The taste that follows is very recognizable, with grapefruit and exotic fruits like papaya and lime This sweetness is combined with absolute freshness and a firm body and salinity at and ABV of 13%. If that isn’t enough to get you hooked the long and elegant finish to will surely knock you out of the park.

This wine costs around €20-25 and has been, and will be one of the favorites for wine critics of the highest caliber. Scores for the 2018 vintage:  James Suckling 95/100 Robert Parker 91+/100 Wine Spectator 92/100 Gault Millau 93/100 Vinum Wein Guide 91/100. A true gem that is often over-looked in the likes of the great GG’s (Grand Cru’s), and excellent work by Wittmann.
