2017 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon – Dunn Vineyards.

In the rugged terrains of the Vaca and Mayacamas mountains, where Napa Valley’s most distinctive wines are born, Dunn Vineyards stands out as one of the pioneers of the region.

Established by Randy Dunn in 1979 on Howell Mountain, this once-overlooked area has become synonymous with exceptional viticulture. Randy, a veteran winemaker since 1975 (including a tenure as winemaker at Caymus wines), and his son Mike, who joined in 1999, continue to craft wines that embody both power and elegance.

In this review we are discussing one of their gems, the 2017 vintage of their ‘Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon’.

About the Winery

Dunn Vineyards stands as a testament to the dedication and passion of the Dunn family. Founded in 1978 by Randy and Lori Dunn, this family-owned winery has blossomed into one of the gems of Howell Mountain. Situated at an elevation of 420 meters, the vineyards benefit from abundant sunshine and cooling breezes, creating a unique microclimate ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon.

The estate spans 42 acres, meticulously cared for by the Dunn family. The distinctive red sandstone and volcanic rock soil contribute to the robust character of their wines. The Howell Mountain Cabernet, Dunn’s signature wine, showcases the intensity and elegance that the AVA is renowned for, with rich, concentrated flavors and firm tannins.

Dunn Vineyards produces two main wines: the Howell Mountain Cabernet and the Napa Valley Cabernet. Both are aged for 32 months in 100% new French oak, allowing the deep, black fruit flavors to develop complexity and structure. The Howell Mountain Cabernet is particularly notable for its boldness and depth, truly epitomizing the terroir of the region.

With a limited production of just 5,000 cases annually, Dunn’s wines are a coveted find for enthusiasts. The vineyard remains a family affair, with Randy’s children actively involved in daily operations. This hands-on approach ensures that the quality and integrity of the wines remain uncompromised.

Dunn Vineyards is a shining example of what dedication to craft and family tradition can achieve. Their wines are not just a reflection of the Howell Mountain terroir but also of the enduring legacy of the Dunn family. Each bottle offers a taste of the rich history and vibrant future of this iconic winery.

About the Wine

The 2017 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon from Dunn Vineyards is a captivating expression of this esteemed Napa Valley sub-AVA. Crafted entirely from estate-grown fruit, this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is aged for 32 months in new French oak, showcasing both power and elegance.

Upon first encounter, the wine reveals a striking intensity. Aromas of dark blue and purple fruit intermingle with notes of graphite, leather, and dried herbs, creating a complex bouquet. On the palate, flavors of ripe cassis, blackberry, and plum are prominent, seamlessly integrated with hints of tar and apple wood. These elements contribute to a muscular yet sleek texture, underscored by a subtle earthiness and a touch of licorice on the long finish.

The 2017 vintage exhibits a rich, velvety texture, balanced by fresh acidity and robust tannins. Herbal notes of thyme and rosemary add layers of complexity, enhancing the classic cassis and blueberry fruit profile. The cedar notes from oak aging are present but do not overshadow the vibrant fruit, maintaining a mouthwatering balance.

This wine is already surprisingly approachable, with its lush fruit and polished structure suggesting excellent aging potential. Best enjoyed from 2025 through 2040, this Howell Mountain Cabernet promises to evolve beautifully, revealing even greater depth and character over time.

A true reflection of its terroir, the 2017 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is both a powerful and graceful wine. Its intensity, combined with a nuanced flavor profile, makes it a stunning addition to any cellar, offering a glimpse into the best of Howell Mountain’s winemaking artistry.

We happily reward this ‘Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon’ with a 97-point DWA score.
