The 2022 Geyserville from Ridge Vineyards stands as one of California’s most enduring and recognizable Zinfandel-based blends. For decades, this wine has served as a benchmark for the style of Sonoma County: expressive, layered and powerful, yet remarkably classical in its balance and structure. In a region often associated with opulence and ripeness, Ridge continues to pursue a philosophy where freshness, structure and vineyard character remain central.
The result is a wine that offers generosity without excess. The 2022 vintage carries the hallmark richness expected from Geyserville, while maintaining the precision and composure that have long defined Ridge’s approach.
Ridge Vineyards was founded in 1962 when a group of Stanford engineers replanted a neglected vineyard on Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains. What began as a modest experiment quickly developed into one of California’s most respected estates.
The winery gained early international recognition with its Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon, which famously performed among the top wines in historic tastings of the 1970s. Alongside Monte Bello, Ridge established a second pillar in its portfolio: historic Zinfandel vineyards across Sonoma County, including the celebrated Geyserville site.
Ridge has long been known for its transparent and restrained winemaking philosophy. Under the long-standing guidance of winemaker Paul Draper, the winery adopted a traditional approach centered on minimal intervention: native fermentations, careful extraction, and a restrained use of new oak. The goal is not stylistic imprint, but clarity of place.
This philosophy is further reflected in Ridge’s well-known “ingredient labeling,” where the winery openly lists all components used during vinification. Transparency and authenticity have become central to the Ridge identity.
The Geyserville wine is produced from fruit sourced from the historic Geyserville Vineyard in Alexander Valley, Sonoma County. Many of the vineyard’s vines are exceptionally old, with some parcels dating back to the late 19th century. The site is planted as a traditional field blend, meaning several grape varieties grow together within the same vineyard blocks.
Zinfandel typically forms the backbone of the blend, supported by varieties such as Carignane, Petite Sirah and Mataro (Mourvèdre). This historic Californian field-blend structure contributes both aromatic complexity and structural depth.
The 2022 growing season in Sonoma County was generally warm and dry. Despite a few heat spikes, the conditions allowed the fruit to ripen evenly, preserving both concentration and freshness at harvest.
In the glass, the wine shows a deep ruby color with youthful purple reflections. The aromatics are generous and expressive: ripe blackberry, black cherry and plum form the core, accompanied by layers of black pepper, dried herbs, licorice and a subtle earthy undertone.
With aeration, additional nuances emerge—hints of cocoa, spice and a faint smoky minerality that add further dimension.
On the palate, the wine shows notable concentration without heaviness. The entry is juicy and fruit-driven, followed by a core of savory spice and a framework of ripe tannins. Fresh acidity provides lift and balance, preventing the wine from feeling overly rich.
Zinfandel delivers aromatic intensity and dark fruit richness, while Carignane and Petite Sirah add color, grip and structural depth. Mourvèdre contributes subtle savory complexity and a slightly wild edge to the blend.
The texture remains rounded yet structured, with a clear sense of balance throughout. The finish is long and spicy, carrying lingering notes of dark berries, black pepper and cocoa.
Food Pairing
The 2022 Geyserville pairs particularly well with dishes that match its depth and structure. Grilled ribeye, slow-braised beef short ribs or roasted lamb with rosemary complement the wine’s savory and spicy elements.
Barbecue dishes such as smoked brisket or glazed pork ribs also work beautifully with the wine’s ripe fruit and peppery character.
Vegetarian options like grilled portobello mushrooms, roasted aubergine or a hearty lentil stew offer earthy counterpoints that integrate seamlessly with the wine’s structure.
Conclusion
With the 2022 Geyserville, Ridge Vineyards once again demonstrates why this wine has become a California classic. It combines richness and aromatic intensity with a level of balance and composure that remains increasingly rare in the region.
The wine is already highly enjoyable in its youth but possesses sufficient structure and depth to evolve gracefully over the coming years.
We award the 2022 Ridge Geyserville a 91/100 DWA score, recognizing it as a characterful and authentic expression of Sonoma’s historic Zinfandel vineyards.
