Château Ducru-Beaucaillou – 2019 La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou.

A polished and expressive second wine from one of Saint-Julien’s most revered estates, delivering precision, depth, and immediate charm while retaining the hallmark structure and mineral signature of Ducru-Beaucaillou.

La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou serves as the second wine of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, sourced from younger vines and carefully selected parcels that do not enter the Grand Vin but are cultivated and vinified with the same uncompromising attention to detail. Its role is not to replicate the Grand Vin in a lesser form, but rather to offer a more accessible and fruit-driven interpretation of the estate’s identity—one that emphasizes approachability while preserving the structural backbone and aromatic clarity for which Ducru-Beaucaillou is known.

The 2019 vintage, considered one of Bordeaux’s standout years of the past decade, provides ideal conditions for this philosophy. It combines ripeness with freshness, resulting in a wine that is generous yet controlled, approachable yet serious. In La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou, this translates into a cuvée that bridges immediate drinkability with clear aging potential, making it particularly compelling for those seeking both value and typicity.

About the Winery

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is one of the Médoc’s most iconic estates, classified as a Deuxième Cru Classé in the historic 1855 Classification. Located in Saint-Julien, its vineyards benefit from a privileged position along the Gironde estuary, where the moderating influence of the water helps to create consistent ripening conditions year after year.

The estate takes its name from the famous “beaux cailloux”—large Günzian gravel stones that dominate its soils. These gravels provide excellent drainage while retaining and radiating heat, allowing for optimal maturation of Cabernet Sauvignon, the backbone of the estate’s blends. This terroir is directly responsible for the hallmark Ducru-Beaucaillou style: wines that combine aromatic precision, mineral tension, and finely etched tannins with an underlying sense of power.

Under the ownership of the Borie family, the estate has undergone a steady evolution toward greater precision in both vineyard management and winemaking. Parcel-by-parcel vinification, careful selection, and a refined approach to oak have elevated the consistency and clarity of expression across the range. Within this framework, La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou plays an essential role—not only as a second wine, but as a distinct expression of the estate’s terroir, crafted with intention rather than compromise.

About the Wine

The 2019 vintage in Bordeaux is defined by excellent phenolic ripeness, balanced acidity, and relatively low yields, producing wines of concentration without heaviness. For La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou, this results in a wine that is both generous in fruit and precise in structure.

In the glass, it reveals a deep, saturated ruby color with vivid purple highlights, suggesting both youth and concentration. The nose is immediately engaging and layered, opening with ripe blackcurrant, blackberry, and dark plum, followed by more nuanced notes of graphite, cedar, and pencil shavings—a clear nod to its Médoc origins. As it evolves in the glass, floral hints of violet emerge alongside touches of cocoa, vanilla, and subtle sweet spice from well-integrated oak.

On the palate, the wine strikes a fine balance between richness and restraint. The entry is smooth and supple, with a core of ripe cassis and black cherry framed by finely grained tannins. These tannins are polished yet present, giving the wine structure without austerity. A fresh line of acidity runs through the mid-palate, providing lift and precision, while a distinct mineral thread—derived from the gravel soils—adds definition and length.

There is a pleasing interplay between fruit and savory elements: dark chocolate, cedar, and a faint herbal nuance complement the ripe fruit profile, adding complexity without overshadowing its primary charm. The finish is persistent and elegant, marked by lingering notes of cassis, spice, and a subtle graphite edge.

While already highly approachable, the wine has sufficient structure and balance to evolve over the medium term. Over the next 8–12 years, it is likely to develop greater aromatic complexity, with tertiary notes gradually emerging while the fruit softens and integrates further.

Conclusion

The 2019 La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou is a compelling and complete expression of Saint-Julien, demonstrating how a second wine can faithfully reflect the identity of a great estate without sacrificing approachability. It captures the essence of Ducru-Beaucaillou’s style—precision, elegance, and mineral-driven structure—while presenting it in a form that is accessible earlier in its life.

What stands out most is the balance: between fruit and structure, richness and freshness, approachability and seriousness. This is not merely an introduction to the estate, but a wine with its own identity and clear sense of place.

It offers excellent value within the context of classified growth Bordeaux, delivering both immediate pleasure and the potential for further development in bottle. It is equally suited to near-term enjoyment or short- to mid-term cellaring, making it a versatile addition to any cellar.

A final detail that adds a touch of distinction: the label of La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou was designed by Jade Jagger, bringing a contemporary artistic signature to a wine deeply rooted in tradition.

We award this wine a 93-point DWA score—a refined, structured, and highly complete Bordeaux that showcases the strength of the 2019 vintage and the enduring quality of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou.

Series: The Second Wines of Bordeaux

Together with our partner Cellar Worthy, we are embarking on a dedicated series exploring the world of Bordeaux’s second wines. Over the coming period, we will review a curated selection of standout examples from leading estates across the region—each offering its own perspective on terroir, accessibility, and value.

The series will culminate in a broader feature examining the concept of second wines in Bordeaux: their historical development, their role within the estates, and—perhaps most importantly—their place in today’s market as both an entry point and a compelling category in their own right.
