In this review we are tasting a wine made of 100% Cabernet Franc, one of the major black grape varieties worldwide. Mostly grown for blending with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in Bordeaux style but also available as monocepage.
This Cabernet Franc from Germany’s Pfalz region is produced by Weingut Neiss.
About the Region
About 40% of the wines produced in the Pfalz consists of red wines, with a large amount of Dornfelder and Spätburgunder but also lesser known varieties like this Cabernet Franc. Grapes that work excellent under the climate of Pfalz, which offers a lot of sunshine and therefore provides for flavorsome and powerful wines. Today we are discussing Cabernet Franc proudly made by Weingut Neiss.
About the Winery
Weingut Neiss is part of the top wineries in Northern Pfalz. Founded in the 1970s by Ludi Neiss and currently owned by his son Axel Neiss who experimented with new grape varieties and wine making techniques. All with great results which has led him to win many awards. The terroir and cool climate is a big part of the success of Weingut Neiss. Where the grapes receive sun and warmth during the day and benefit from cool nights.
About the Wine
The vines are grown at Sonnenberg. Facing south-east, the Sonnenberg site is high above Bockenheim. The soil contains a lot of limestone and is partly covered with clay. Wines with a lot of structure, power and rich flavor nuances grow on the mineral subsoil. Together a perfect fit for this Cabernet Franc.
The grapes of this particular wine are picked by hand and aged for 18 months in barriques which provides a well-known hint of vanilla and oak.
Once poured in the glass the wine has a deep red color and an intense and aromatic smell, bursting with fruit and oak. Once we take a sip, notes of raspberry and black currant come forward, followed by hints of paprika, green herbs and earthy aromas. Together they provide the wine with complexity and medium body.
Conclusion:
The wine is elegant and versatile on the palette with pleasant acidity and soft tannins. The finish lingers on with a surprising dash of cacao. Cabernet Franc has been described as the perfect chillable red. Therefore, serve slightly chilled to enjoy the warmer evenings ahead and pair with your favorite summer cuisine.
We award this beautiful German Cabernet with a 93-point DWA score.
