Dutch wine is going places, and Wijnhoeve De Kleine Schorre is a perfect example.
As one of the leading producers in the country, De Kleine Schorre demonstrates the potential of the Netherlands as a wine country. In this review we are taking a look at their 2023 Schouwen-Duiveland Auxerrois.
Founded in 2001, Wijnhoeve De Kleine Schorre is located on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland in the province of Zeeland. The estate began as one of the oldest farms in the area, dating back to 1735, and has since grown from an agricultural farm into one of the largest vineyards in the Netherlands. Originally producing potatoes, onions and Brussels sprouts, it evolved into a modern winery, now spanning 14 hectares.
The estate was founded and is led by Johan van de Velde, together with Paula van de Vijver, and in collaboration with the Vesque family of Luxembourg’s renowned producer Cep d’Or. Together, they have built a reputation for clean, expressive wines that reflect the maritime character of Zeeland.
The grapes grow on fertile clay soils rich in lime and seashells, constantly influenced by the sea breeze, and enjoy the most sun hours in the country. These conditions deliver freshness, minerality, and finesse to the wine.
The estate focuses exclusively on white grape varieties, suitable for the Zeeland climate, such as Auxerrois, Pinot Gris, Rivaner, and Souvignier Gris. Next to still white wines, sparkling wines are made using the traditional method.
They are the only producer on the island, and in 2023 they successfully obtained a BOB (Beschermde Oorsprongsbenaming), the Dutch designation comparable to a PDO/AOP, highlighting both their pioneering role and the region’s quality. Their wines are even served in KLM’s business class.
The Auxerrois 2023 is a beautiful expression of this variety, closely related to pinot blanc but with slightly more body and softer acidity. The wine opens with bright aromas of green apple and citrus, followed by riper notes of pear and peach. On the palate, it is clean and lively, with a silky texture and balanced freshness that keeps the wine engaging from start to finish. A perfect fit for local delicacies such as oysters!
Conclusion
This Auxerrois 2023 is a pure, fresh, and well-balanced wine that pairs beautifully with seafood, or can simply be enjoyed on its own. De Kleine Schorre continues to invest in the future, recently expanding their winery with a new cellar, and it’s safe to say we will be hearing much more from them in the years ahead.
We reward this wine with a 89/100 DWA score.
