Cuvée Gustavo 2018 – Chapelle de Boucarut.

Dessert wines, we are big fans! Normally it is the white ones for us (late harvest from Germany) but recently we got this cute red lady from our friends at Petit Clos Bussum. A sweet and red wine, from France, as we said something we are pretty new too, so we where curious to see what this bottle would bring to the table.

The Winemakers

The wine is produced by the Chateau Boucarut, owned by Saskia and Maurice. Saskia and Maurice were not destined to become winemakers maybe (as both have a law degree) but in love with nature, they take advantage of every opportunity to go green with their family. Both have their roots in France (Maurice in Alsace, and Saskia in Roquemaure). In the south Els, Saskia’s mother brought the Château de Boucarut to life in the 90s with her husband Ramon.

Since 2017 Maurice and Saskia converted all of their vineyards to organic farming. Today, Château de Boucarut has 20 hectares mainly in Lirac cru, in the Rhône area.

The Wine

This cuvée is made of 100% marselan grapes. Marselan is a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache, two grapes that fare well in the warmer regions, like the south of France. The result combines to interesting pallets of taste; the refined power and structure of Cabernet Sauvignon and the spicy richness of Grenache. The wine is highly aromatic with a smooth and soft taste. Primary notes are bramble fruits, cassis, and cherry. This sweetness is complemented with spices like cinnamon and clove. The wine works perfectly as a dessert wine for me, a cheese selection but also a dessert with chocolate, blackberry or raspberry and vanilla.
