Carmignano Villa di Capezzana 2018 – Capezzana.
For this review we will travel to Tuscany once more. As many of you know Tuscany is famous for their prestigious Sangiovese grape, its Super Tuscans and the mountainous Chianti region. This time we are going to discuss a wine made by Tenuta Capezzana. A winery that is not new to us. Last year, two wines of this winery were reviewed: their “Barco Reale Carmignano” and “Ghiaie della Furba 2017”. In this review it is time to discuss their “Carmignano Villa di Capezzana 2018”.
About the Winery
The Capezzana winery is located in the small town of Carmignano, situated in Tuscany. Carmignano is also referred to as “a little Tuscany”. It stretches between the gentle hills of Montalbano and contains everything that has made this region famous and loved for all over the world: great art, landscape, archeology, wine and wonderful food. Now let us talk about the lovely wines of this region, produced by Capezzana.
It all started in 1920, when the winery came into the hands of the Contini Bonacossi family. Short after they purchased two neighboring farms: “Il Poggetto” and “Trefiano”. This resulted in them becoming one of the leading producers in the region. The family is fortunate to inherit the characteristic hilly land that has always yielded great wines. In 2009 they started to practice more respectful farming methods, taking great strides toward organic farming. The hard work paid off, as nowadays Capezzana is BIO certified.
In their vision the family believes in the taste of origin and they strive to produce wines of consistent quality. On aim to achieve this by blending their wines, which has become one of the Capezzana’s trademarks and expertise.
About the Wine
This Villa di Capezzana 2018 is as well a blend from Sangiovese (80%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (20%). Resulting in a deep ruby wine. Nevertheless, when looking at the rim a small hint of Garnet is showing. This is the first result of some of the ageing that took place. The wine ages for over a year in tonneaux (oak cask of 900L) and in bottle for about 12 months. Since this is the 2018 vintage it has some additional bottle ageing on the top.
The hilly landscape helps the grapes to receive more heat and light, which leads to riper grapes and more complex aromas of stewed black fruit, such as plum and blackberry. These are combined with notes of smoke, tobacco and some additional spiciness. When drinking the spiciness is more noticeable while flavours of canella, nutmeg and balsamic flow through your mouth. This ensemble ends with a taste of pepper.
Furthermore, this high alcohol wine (14.5% ABV) can leave a bit of a burning feeling, not only in your mouth but as well in your throat. Another surprising effect is the slight tingling on your tongue, which is the combination of the alcohol and the riper tannins. This makes the acidity fade away a bit due to the explosive taste of the wine. There is a long finish where all the components melt together. A wine that is best enjoyed with heavier meat dishes based on beef, lamb or cured meat.
Conclusion: With this wine Capezzana proved again how complex and elegant Tuscan wines can be. And all of this in a consistent way, through blending and a focus on terroir.
