Trementinaire 2018 – Herència Altés.
In this review a very special orange wine from the Spanish winery Herència Altés, located in the D.O. Terra Alta (in the southern part of Catalunya). Made from Garnacha Blanca this wine has a very unique character and looks absolutely stunning! This is the Trementinaire by Herència Altés.
About the Winery
Nuria Altes founded Herència Altés in 2010. As an homage and memory to her roots, family. Organic viticulture and sustainable winemaking form the heart of the winery. Garnacha is their variety of choice and with this they produce a number of white, rose, orange and red wines. They cultivate 50 hectares of vines located at altitudes ranging from 420 to 500 meters above sea level in and around Batea and Gandesa in the Terra Alta region. 20 hectares are dedicated to old vines, planted between the early and mid-twentieth century.
About the Wine
Trementinaire is an orange wine made from white Garnacha grapes, which means a white wine made using red wine production methods. In the production process the must has seen extensive lees contact (5 weeks), after which it is pressed and transferred to 300-liter (used) oak barrels. After this oxidative ageing starts for no less than 30 months. It is a small production wine; no more than 1,500 bottles are produced.
The result is a wine that is intense but fresh. A gorgeous orange color in a beautiful bottle intrigues you, after which the nose greats you with herbal notes, orange skin, marmalade and honey. On the palette the wine is surprisingly elegant but with a firm body. An oxidative wine with notes of spices and dried candied fruit. The aftertaste is long and salty, with sweet characteristics. Not for the fainthearted, with an ABV of 15%, but nothing the wine can’t handle! A great pairing with almonds, nuts or cheeses.
