Dominio de Miros 2018 – Bodegas Peñafiel.

Spain’s Ribera del Duero D.O. offers a wealth of old vines, some of them reaching ages of more than 100 years. The region has the highest number of old vines of Spain, and in size probably even the world. In this review we are taking a look at the 2018 vintage of the Dominio de Miros, produced by Bodegas Peñafiel. A Tempranillo wine made from grapes that derive from such ‘centennial’ vines.

About the Winery

Founded in 2003, Bodegas Peñafiel is a relatively young winery that has swiftly made a name for itself in the world of fine wines. Located in Spain’s Ribera del Duero region, this winery has become synonymous with producing exceptional wines that capture the essence of their unique terroir.

The winery stands out in its setting, a small stone-built structure amidst Ribera del Duero’s so called ‘Golden Mile’ (Milla de Oro), under the vigilant presence of the historic Peñafiel Castle. This location is not just picturesque but also strategic, with vineyards perched over 900 meters above sea level, making them among the highest in Europe. This elevation, coupled with the region’s extreme weather variations, provides a unique advantage in creating terroir-driven wines.

The winery was established by a group of wine enthusiasts who shared a passion for creating top-tier wines. Their vision was to blend traditional wine-making methods with the latest technology, a philosophy that has guided them in producing a diverse range of quality wines. Bodegas Peñafiel prides itself on selecting the finest vineyards and harvesting grapes at the optimal point of maturity. Their meticulous attention to detail extends through the entire production process. Aging in selected barrels adds elegance and finesse to their wines, which are then allowed to rest in bottles until they reach perfection.

In its relatively short history, Bodegas Peñafiel has established itself as a master of high-quality aging and a producer of distinguished wines. Each bottle is a testament to their dedication, skill, and the unique terroir of Ribera del Duero.

About the Wine

The 2018 Dominio de Miros by Bodegas Peñafiel is a testament to the art of crafting fine Tempranillo. Originating from century-old vines, this wine is a celebration of tradition and modern winemaking techniques, aging gracefully for 36 months in French oak barrels. The result is a seamless and seductive wine, embodying masterful aging and complexity.

Visually, the wine presents a striking cherry red color with a violet rim, hinting at the depth and vibrancy of flavors to follow. The nose is a powerful, elegant tapestry of aromas, combining the richness of cherry, plum, and violet, with the warmth of sandalwood. These aromas are further enriched by the vivid scent of black olives, herbal tones, and the freshness of red fruits.

On the palate, the Dominio de Miros is a symphony of flavors. Blackberry and dried figs lead the charge, beautifully complemented by nuances of cocoa, vanilla, and pepper spice. This richness is balanced by the vivaciousness of redcurrants, plums, raisins, and subtle truffle notes, all tied together with toasty undertones from its oak aging. The wine’s powerful and elegant profile is given structure by fine-grained, incredibly well-balanced tannins, lending it a texture that is both luxurious and inviting.

The finish is long and satisfying, a testament to the wine’s depth and power. It lingers on the palate, a blend of ripe fruits, oak spices, and a hint of earthiness, leaving a desire for another glass.

From its visually appealing hue to its complex bouquet and rich, layered palate, the 2018 Dominio de Miros is a beautiful example of what carefully aged Tempranillo can offer. It is a wine that speaks of its origin and of the care taken in its creation. We happily award this Tempranillo beauty with a 93-point DWA score.

This review is written by our own Niels Aarts. Dominio de Miros is produced in an extremely low volume (just 1,218 bottles, we had the pleasure of tasting bottle 164) and sold through a number of selected retailers in various countries.
