2019 Château Rauzan-Ségla – Ségla.
A fresh breeze is sweeping through Bordeaux, one of the world’s most iconic wine regions. Climate change and evolving tastes are reshaping vineyard practices and cellar techniques and a new generation of owners has taken the helm at several renowned châteaux, each bringing unique philosophies and visions.
Château Rauzan-Ségla, a 2nd Cru Classé in the Margaux appellation, exemplifies this transformation. In this review, we focus on the Château’s second wine, the 2019 vintage of Ségla.
About the Winery
The reputation of this left-bank 2ème Cru Classé Château Rauzan-Ségla dates back to the 19th century. However, after struggling through much of the 20th century, the estate began a remarkable resurgence in the early 1980s, culminating with its acquisition by Chanel in 1994.
Under the guidance of the renowned Professor Emile Peynaud, the estate increased the proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon in its blend and introduced a higher percentage of new oak during maturation. A modern cuverie was built in 1986, and today, the 45 hectares of vineyards at Rauzan-Ségla are planted with 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, with all grapes fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks.
Leading the winemaking is Nicolas Audebert, a celebrated figure in Bordeaux who started off in the Champagne region and after that gained acclaim in the New World with Cheval des Andes. Audebert now oversees Chanel’s wine estates, including Château Canon and Château Berliquet in Saint-Émilion.
About the Wine
The 2019 Ségla showcases the distinct charm of Margaux with a captivating nose of bright red summer berries, freshly picked strawberries, and a delicate touch of floral notes. From the first sip, this wine impresses with its clarity and energy, balancing juicy, ripe fruit flavors with a vibrant and playful profile.
The palate is medium-bodied with elegantly integrated tannins, lending a supple texture that complements the wine’s core of ripe fruit. Fresh minerality emerges alongside a whisper of dryness, adding depth and refinement to this second wine from Château Rauzan-Ségla. The balance between acidity and fruit is finely tuned, providing a structure that feels seamless yet lively.
With a blend that leans on Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2019 Ségla reveals layers of blackberries, minty cassis, and a hint of rose petal, underscored by subtle earthy tones. Its precision and lingering, mineral-driven finish highlight a well-made wine that stands out for its charm, depth, and refined approachability. Perfectly suited for early enjoyment yet with the backbone to age gracefully, this vintage is a testament to the skill behind Château Rauzan-Ségla.
We award this wine with a 91-point DWA score.
