About the Winery
The renowned winery La Scolca stands as a testament to the rich winemaking traditions of the region. With its lush vineyards, historic cellars, and dedication to crafting exceptional wines, La Scolca has earned its place as a beacon of excellence in the world of Italian winemaking.
La Scolca’s story began over a century ago when the Soldati family, pioneers in the Gavi area, acquired the estate. It was in 1919 that the grandmother, Rosa, first planted Cortese grapes, the hallmark variety of the Gavi region. Little did she know that this decision would shape the destiny of La Scolca and contribute to the elevation of Gavi wines on the international stage.
Under the guidance of Giorgio Soldati, Rosa’s grandson, La Scolca evolved into a winery focused on producing high-quality, terroir-driven wines. Giorgio’s passion for winemaking and his commitment to showcasing the unique characteristics of the Cortese grape led La Scolca to become an influential force in the Gavi DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) appellation.
One of the hallmarks of La Scolca is its meticulous vineyard management. The estate boasts prime vineyard sites, thoroughly tended by a dedicated team of viticulturists. However, La Scolca’s flagship wine, Gavi dei Gavi, is the epitome of their winemaking philosophy. Crafted from hand-harvested Cortese grapes, this wine showcases the elegant, crisp, and refreshing character that has made Gavi wines so highly regarded. With its vibrant acidity, delicate floral aromas, and notes of citrus and stone fruits, Gavi dei Gavi captures the essence of the region and has become a symbol of quality and finesse. Beyond Gavi dei Gavi, La Scolca offers a range of other exceptional wines, like their low-alcohol wine.
La Scolca stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Italian winemaking and the art of creating exceptional wines that embody the unique characteristics of their terroir. With its dedication to quality, respect for tradition, and commitment to excellence, La Scolca continues to attract wine enthusiasts.
About the Wine
Cortegaia is La Scolca’s newest, low alcohol wine, displaying extreme concepts of environmental and social sustainability. They want to show, that the concept of sustainability has expanded beyond wine production, leading people to select cutting-edge packaging with a closure made possible by the recovery of ocean plastics. Furthermore, this wine is not matured in oak to ensure the beautiful primary fruit aromas of the Cortese grape come across. This is definitely true.
On the nose, delicate aromas of white flowers and citrus blossoms intertwine with hints of green apple, pear, and a subtle touch of minerality. The palate is greeted by lively acidity, perfectly balanced with flavors of lemon, crisp green apple, and a touch of grapefruit. The wine’s medium body and smooth texture add elegance, while the acidity provides a refreshing and lingering finish where the riper fruit components stay in the mouth. Enjoy this wine as an aperitif or pair it with fresh seafood, or light pasta dishes for an extra touch.
Conclusion:
With its harmonious blend of fruit, freshness, and the 9.5% abv, the Cortegaia is a testament to La Scolca’s mastery of crafting elegant wines. This wine tailors to the trend of healthier, low alcohol wines and is a refreshing choice for the summer. We award this wine with a 82 point DWA score.
