Gant Merlot Riserva 2018 – Cantina Andrian.

Previously we reviewed a Merlot produced by Cantina Terlan (click here for the review). In this review it is time for Terlan’s sister winery Cantina Andriano with their Riserva “Gant”. Labeled as Alto Adige DOC this wine finds its roots around the town of Terlano.

About the Winery 

Cantina Andrian (aka Kellerei Andrian) was founded in 1893 as the first cooperative in Alto Adige, since 2008 they have bundled their forces with their neighbors Cantina Terlan. Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir and Merlot are Andrian’s main varieties, combined with the local star Lagrein. Their vineyards count for about 80 hectares.

About the Wine 

This wine comes from vineyards in the Alto Adige valley, sheltered by the hills surrounding Terlano in proximity of the Adige river. Raised on sandy clay soil this is where Merlot thrives. 

Fermentation for this wine takes place in stainless steel tanks in order to retain as much of the fruit profile as possible. Afterwards malolactic fermentation took place, with further ageing in oak barriques. Only 9,000 bottles are produced in the 2018 vintage.

In the glass a deep ruby red colour accompanied by an aroma of intense fruit flavors. Fresh and deep notes of cherry and blackberry go hand in hand with more delicate hints of tobacco and leather. On the palette the two ends of the spectrum continue their symphony, with the fruit character deepening and leading to a smooth and rich mouthfeel. A full body and soft tannins give you a warm feel, gentle but standing tall with a lengthy juicy aftertaste. Well-orchestrated, balanced and very approachable. Ageing ability for this wine is between 8-10 years.
